Our local government is working hard to house those displaced and budget for restoration of our beloved Lahaina. Maui is quickly recovering from the fire that occurred in Lahaina last year but is still suffering economically from the global news circulation, instructing tourists to forego their planned vacations to Maui. As a result, many businesses and families are struggling to meet their financial needs as so many of our welcomed tourists have decided to cancel their trips to Maui. According to Maui’s Economic Development Board, about 70 cents of every dollar generated in Maui comes from tourism. As you can imagine, Maui is eager and ready for you to return to our island, as the whole economy is in need. We want to join our local community in voicing that “Maui needs YOU”, as so many families and local communities depend on tourism to support themselves and each other. Our local government is working hard to house those displaced and budget for restoration of our beloved Lahaina. We want to encourage all who read our newsletter and keep in touch with Maui, to take the leap and vacation here on island. The island is open and is as beautiful as ever and your stay with Kihei Kai and many others will be secured and unaltered regardless of current news circulation. Lahaina’s famous Banyan Tree has survived and is in recovery! Teams have trimmed the injured sections and treated the tree to protect it from local pests and to support the weakened areas still growing. Much like the Spirit of Aloha in Maui, there is still life and new growth from the tree and arborist expect the landmark to survive another 100 years to come!

Hawai’i Facts: Lahaina
Lahaina is nearing the end of their clean-up operation, expected to be completed in the next 2-3 months. Once the teams have completed the clean up, Maui will begin their rebuilding. Crews are working overtime shifts to restore our beloved town to its former glory. Many are still suffering major losses but we have seen our local Ohana go above and beyond to provide housing, healing and support for those who were displaced and affected. Maui has suffered so much as whole and we have seen the largest part of our economy, tourism, plummet since the devastation. Our local companies, officials, and people, encourage those to come visit our beautiful island as our state thrives on sharing the beauty and culture of the island with everyone around the world.

Hawai’i Facts: Whale Season
Humpback whales depart the icy waters of Alaska in the fall for Hawai’i. They come to breed, give birth, and play. In Maui, the underwater visibility from the crystal clear water is exceptional. The variety of shallow (800’) and deep (18,000’) waters mixed with no natural predators gives them the ultimate safe space to raise and nurture their young calves in safety.

Hawai’i Facts: Silversword
The silvery hairs, fleshy leaves, and low-growing rosette form of Hawai’i Silverswords allow them to survive in hot, dry climates like the aeolian desert cinder slopes of the crater at Haleakala National Park on Maui and the high deserts of Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawai’i.
Silverswords live between 3 and 90 years or more. They flower once, sending up a spectacular flowering stalk, and then die soon afterward, scattering drying seeds to the wind.
